Module 2: Enhancing English Skills with AI

Module 2 was undoubtedly much more practical than the previous one. Here, I was able to directly explore and experiment with artificial intelligence tools that enhance English language skills and discover the variety of options available. This was the first time I saw how AI could be integrated into each macro-skill—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—not just as a complement, but as a core part of the activity.

In developing receptive skills, I loved discovering platforms like Read Along. This tool allows readings to be adapted to a student's level and includes personalized questions. I corroborated this firsthand by working on a project with it, seeing how it functions and understanding that even though it's AI, it can still make mistakes. This means paying attention to detail remains fundamental when using such tools. I also explored NotebookLM to help with text and reading, as it can also generate comprehension exercises. Additionally, it implements options such as podcasts and AI-powered interactive conversations to assist its users with the texts they're working on and strengthen listening skills while obtaining firsthand answers to their questions. These experiences showed me how I can deliver authentic and personalized materials much more quickly and effectively.

One of my favorite experiences was creating educational bots with Gemini. Here, I learned how to design an assistant for almost anything. From a conversational assistant to practice pronunciation and common phrases, to a subject-specific assistant that helps us improve in areas we think we're weak in. Although it can often be challenging, I learned a lot about how to structure a conversational flow and how prompt design affects responses. I was excited to see how something I programmed could truly support learning.

This module left me with many practical ideas. Now I know I can use these tools not only to facilitate learning, but also to motivate myself, knowing the endless practical uses these tools have.

  1. I really liked your reflection! It’s great how you explored each macro skill and connected it with specific tools like Read Along and NotebookLM. I also found the part about creating bots with Gemini really inspiring; it’s amazing how we can now design our own assistants to support learning in such a personalized way.

  2. Hi Alejandro! I had a great time reading your blog. I like the visual style you gave it and the content as well. I agree with you when you mention that now we have access to different AIs to develop the different macro-skills. It is a great opportunity for us as teachers for developing meaningful activities in the classroom, as well as for students because they can learn at their own speed.
